Be More Aware of the Impact of Your Design Decisions

Understanding the role of Design extends beyond just creating designs – it can have a far-reaching impact on the world. Design isn’t merely a job, but a method to instigate change, which carries a significant responsibility. The question is, what kind of change do you wish to bring about?

You’ve likely heard that social media apps can foster addiction, or that location-tracking apps could jeopardise user privacy if their data falls into the wrong hands.

While most digital products are developed with benevolent intentions, we can’t always control or foresee how they’ll be used once they’re released.

As a designer, it’s your responsibility to keep this broader perspective in mind, akin to how architects account for the safety of their buildings.

Working for a company, you’ll be tasked to utilise your design skills to drive more engagement, views, and profit. However, it’s vital to use your voice to advocate for your users. Stand up to protect them from addiction, misinformation, and rights violations. Challenge company decisions that could potentially disseminate misinformation, misconduct, or injustice. Carry this mindset with you every day. You have the authority to set your product’s boundaries and prevent your design abilities from being used for harmful intentions.
