Balancing Form and Function

Design is about both aesthetics and functionality. Achieving a balance between these two aspects is the pinnacle of a designer’s craft. What would you say if we suggested that both sides of your brain have equal value in design?

Let’s begin by debunking the belief that design is merely about aesthetics. In digital product design, much of our effort is directed toward understanding the logic behind an interface: the mechanics, user navigation, and scalability of the design system across different scenarios. A significant part of our day involves using our analytical skills to enable complex interactions.

However, we also strive for our products to be visually pleasing and simple. Aesthetics greatly influence how users perceive an experience, and by extension, a brand. Clean visuals, a clear typographic hierarchy, and harmonious grids are some components we use to create visually balanced products. Furthermore, the appropriate use of color, imagery, and motion can evoke various emotional responses from users.

Balancing functionality (usability) and aesthetics is one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of being a digital designer. This balance is frequently discussed. In some organisations, these roles are split, with UX Designers focusing on usability and Visual Designers on aesthetics. In other companies, one professional handles both aspects. Ultimately, functionality and aesthetics are inseparable. As a designer, it’s essential to understand and continually develop skills in both areas.
